Tues. Jan 3, Borrego Springs California, fun

Join us as we travel North America in our Holiday Rambler Vacationer,
 since August 2006

 Where are we Today ?

A beautiful sunny warm California morning up early, computing, coffee and a walkabout. Always excited when we are ready to hit the road on a new adventure.

We are on the road shortly after 9 am said goodbye to Desert Hot Springs, pass by Palm Springs and head east on I-10 towards Salton City, and the Salton Sea then thru some more desert to Borrego Springs. A nice two hour drive.

Just before we got into town we spotted a good place to boondock. (Free camping in the desert with no hookups). A dozen or more rv's set up here maybe half with Canadian licence plates. So we found a nice spacious spot of "home dirt".

home dirt
Now all set up , had a bite for lunch and in the little car off to Borrego Springs in search of Galleta Meadows and to see how many of the 129 steel sculptures (by artist Ricardo Breceda) we can locate in the surrounding desert.

Well we searched and we drove on roads, desert trails, pathways, should of had a Jeep for this, but we enjoyed more than  three hours, locating some of his great artwork. We had a map with general locations of where  his work was spread around town, but mostly we scanned the desert spotting them in the distance. A few pictures here and the rest are in the slideshow at the bottom of todays posting.

These Raptors below we just happened to notice about a mile or so away from the road, so a very long dirt trail took us over rocks and around cactus to locate these and still more that we were unable to get to because of the rough trails.

Well after our fill of exploring we returned to home dirt, get out our chairs and read for a while in the sun and the shade. And while sitting here a fellow RV'er noticed our Ontario licence plates and stopped by to chat for a bit. They are from Bownmanville Ontario only a few hours from where our home base is and spend their winters in southern California and Arizona as well.
relaxing with our books
On our way back out of town we passed the Borrego Valley Airport (tiny little place) but they had an Airplane there and a restaurant that looked interesting and was close to our home dirt.

Well we discussed supper and decided that we would treat ourselves to a little local flair and italian cuisine at the Borrego Valley Airport restaurant. We were not disappointed, nicely decorated (airplanes every where inside) and the food was very good, large portions and reasonably priced.

Now after a great day, and a very tasty meal we headed back home again, to  but up our feet, read and compute for a while before calling it a full day.

Oh and thanks Larry for reminding us to stop here.

  1. We are saving like crazy to get some solar panels so that we can do some boondocking. Doing it with generator just seems to be cheating to us. Love the sculptures. We will have to go up there and get some pictures for our grandkids. Wonder if we have ever met the folk from Bowmanville. Happy travels.
