      "Since 1969, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest has developed its own traditions, becoming the largest Bavarian festival in North America with the greatest Thanksgiving Day Parade in Canada. Thousands of visitors celebrate annually in the Festhallen, and by attending one or more of our 40 family and cultural events." 

       In 1970 I moved from Toronto to Kitchener/Waterloo and discovered the celebrations and activities of Oktoberfest. From the festhalls, parades, foods, dances, music,beauty contests, you name it this is one lively area of Ontario for 10 days, and it all begins with our Thanksgiving weekend.

      It all began with the tapping of the Keg on friday, then the party begins. There is 14 official Festhallen, including the 4 german clubs in Kitchener. The largest is the Concordia Club with their huge auxiliary tent erected every september just for this 10 day event with a capacity of 3950 people.

      Now over the years I have probably been to almost every event, every festhall, sampled many of the kegs, and lots of the Oktoberfest Sausage, pig tails, schnitzel, german potato salad, sauerkraut and danced many polkas. We have attended numerous parades on Thanksgiving monday followed by family day celebrations at the Concordia Club tent, games, for the kids, Bavarian music and dancing. Then end up with a get together on monday for some turkey. 

      Now for a various reasons we don't participate as much as we used to, it could be how expensive it has become to indulge, it could be because of our retirement and fixed income, it could be because we want to visit with our 5 grandchildren and families in the peace a quiet of our campsite, or it could be because neither one of us wants to be the designated driver.

      So today after we got our coach oil spray-undercoated at Pettigrew's Garage in Plattsville, we returned to the farm, set up camp again and enjoyed the nice warm fall day playing with Omer in the yard.

      Then a nice relaxing supper of a peameal back bacon roast, with creamy mashed potatoes, carrots and a cucumber/lettuce salad. And before we knew it, it was time for bed.
